In Week 17 at Oodi, we mend, upcycle, and talk about the future
Week 17 is a joint Sustainable Development theme week for libraries. At Oodi, the week is celebrated in the spirit of Fashion Revolution—repairing the old, learning new skills, and engaging in discussions together. During the week at Oodi:
- We admire slow fashion at the week-long Fashion Revolution exhibition
- We discuss more inclusive fashion and how to make clothes last longer
- We print sewing patterns using the new pattern printer at the Urban Workshop
- We upcycle garments in an upcycling workshop
- We repair clothes through techniques such as needle felting, darning, and the Japanese boro method
- We swap craft supplies and learn how to identify high-quality textiles
- We solve knitting problems, create radical cross-stitch pieces, and knit together
- We learn the basic use of leatherworking tools and explore the Baltic sprang (tablet weaving) tradition
The week’s events are organized together with: Aalto University, Aikama, Burak Turkoz, Emmy, Globe Hope, Helsinki Youth Services, Hyvät Martat, Kaisa Turtiainen, Kädentaitomartat, Mendis Collective, Nina Jatuli, Ommel ry, Paula Malleus, Pääkaupunkiseudun Kierrätyskeskus, Radikaalit ristipistot, Sarianna Niskala, Suutarimestari Ville, Suomen Tekstiili & Muoti, and Taitoliitto.
Week 17 is part of the make-a-thek project, which has received funding from the EU’s Horizon Europe programme.
