Book Club in English
Palestine! Gender apartheid! Eco-catsastrophe! The end of the world (possibly). Feminism and ecophilosophy to the rescue?
In this English language Book Club in which we will read books in English and discuss them in English and Finnish, we will explore great literature, analyze books fervently for their meanings and potential, find our voices amongst them, and also consider things such as not only what they say about the zeitgeist, humanity, the authors, and literature as a medium but also what they make us feel and why, how we might best respond, why we love them, what we hate about them, and who we might become in response. We aim for a visceral reaction to literature - not in our heads but in our guts.
In this book club we will delve into the complexities of feminism and eco philosophy, riot against global gender apartheid and capitalism, attempt to destroy the root causes of the patriarchy and climate change, explore the themes of care, violence and constraint in mental health, illness and mental healthcare, consider (and act on) how to save the world, and think deeply about who we are and are meant to be as a species.
For the first meeting, we will read short stories about Palestine during the meeting and discuss them.
