Indigenous in the city

Contrary to popular belief, a big share of indigenous people is not dwelling in remote locations and engaging in traditional economic activities like reindeer herding, hunting, or gathering. Modern-day indigenous people like Native Americans (U.S.) or Sámi (Finland) are highly urbanized. Russian-Komi researcher, Maria Fedina, describes the challenges of indigenous urban residents, and how they maintain their indigenous identities despite problematic discussions around the authenticity of indigenous peoples. Maria’s main research project centers around the Komi people (Komi Republic, Russia). Come find out what it means to be indigenous in the city!
