Oodi joins make-a-thek to develop sustainable fashion and circular making in libraries
Oodi is participating in the make-a-thek project, which develops open, accessible centers for sustainable fashion, crafts, and circular economy in libraries across Europe.
For visitors to Oodi’s Urban Workshop, make-a-thek will appear in the form of events, workshops, and new services. During the spring, visitors can, for example, learn various craft skills and repair techniques, and as a completely new service, customers will have access to a sewing pattern printer.
Through clothing repair pop-ups, people can regularly get help extending the life cycle of their garments, and in the Käsityön äärellä discussion events, participants can meet other craft enthusiasts. Throughout the spring, young people will be offered clothing upcycling and repair workshops with different themes. Fashion Revolution Week will culminate in a sustainable fashion celebration day at Oodi on Sunday, April 26.
In addition to Oodi, nine European libraries and three libraries outside Europe are participating in make-a-thek. New ideas and practices developed in the project will be shared globally through an open digital toolkit. After the pilot year, successful activities will also be expanded to other Helsinki libraries.
Oodi’s Urban Workshop is a pioneer among library makerspace services, and with make-a-thek we are taking the next steps toward an even more sustainable and community-oriented Urban Workshop. At Oodi, make-a-thek is carried out together with several partners, such as the Mendis Repair Collective, Finnish Crafts Organization, and the City of Helsinki Youth Services.
make-a-thek has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme (grant agreement no. 101177660).
